Children's Construction of Literacy Through Writing

Hello Class!

This blog entry takes us to chapter 5, where we will find some things about the process of writing in children, which generally develops in stages that are parallel to the acquisition of oral language, so children even develop their own coded system.

Please read from page 60 to 64 in our textbook and answer the following:
  1. What are scribbles? At what age do children begin using them and when do they stop using them and evolve?
  2. Why do children start using invented spelling? Why is this process completely logical to researchers?
  3. Please explain in your own words the three stages of invented spelling in English, before arriving at standard spelling, according to Temple, Nathan, and Burris (1982).
  4. What is Emilia Ferreiro and Ana Teberosky's term psychogenesis about?
  5. In your own words, describe each of the three developmentally ordered levels found in children as they construct the written system of Spanish.

Remember that opinions can not be exactly the same, and if you do not answer every question to the detail, you will not get all the points for your comments.

Deadline: Sunday, Nov. 13th, at 11:59pm.

  1. 1. What are scribbles? At what age do children begin using them and when do they stop using them and evolve?
Scribbles are the first steps in learning to write. Much early than age three, children may use scribbles similar to cursive to represent labels, names, or ideas. As motor control gradually increases, the scribbles more closely resemble adult cursive writing. By the age of three, many children already have distinguished between drawing and writing as two different symbols systems for expressing one´s meaning.

    2. Why do children start using invented spelling? Why is this process completely logical to researchers?
Significant changes in children´s writing occur when they figure out that the squiggles or forms are related to the sound of the language they are writing. At this point, in alphabetic language such as English, children begin to relate the letters they are writing to the words they are creating and use invented spelling. Studies of invented spelling have made it clear that children´s attempt at orthography are logical and reasoned although they do not conform to standard adult form.

    3. Three stages of invented spelling in English:
    Phonemic stage
The child uses a letter or group of letters to represent every speech sound that they hear in a word. Also their choices do not conform to conventional English spelling, they are systematic and easily understood. Example: RCRBKD representing “Our car broke down”.
    Letter-name
They develop an understanding of the alphabetic principle that a link exists between letters and sounds. Children use only several letters of the alphabet to represent an entire word. For example: “A kid sawed a red and pink house” as A KCID SOD A RAD AND PEC HWS.
    Transitional stage
In this stage, students are learning to recognize common patterns and structures in words, and they begin to use those patterns in their writing. Spelling at this stage incorporates both the correct spellings of words and invented spelling that reflect the use of spelling patterns found in print.

    4. What is Emilia Ferreiro and Ana Teberosky's term psychogenesis about?
It is about the gradual evolution of children´s literacy development. Ferreiro and Teberosky (1982) suggest that children move through three developmentally ordered levels as they construct the written system of Spanish. At each level children create certain theories about how writing works.

    5. In your own words, describe each of the three developmentally ordered levels found in children as they construct the written system of Spanish.
-At the first level of development, children realize that drawing and writing are different symbol systems.
-At the second level of development, children conclude that they can use the stock of letter forms available to them to express meaning.
-The final stage of development child knows the language orthographic system and its basic rules, and also children consider how letter forms relate to the sound s of the language.

Children beging to relate the letters they are writing to the worrd they are creating and use invented spelling. Studies of invented spelling have made it clear that children´s attempts at orthography are logical and reasoned although they dont conform to standard adult forms. In addition , invented spelling changes over time, describing several stages of invented spelling in English.

3.Explain in your own words the three stages of invented spelling in English, before arriving at standard spelling, according to Temple, Nathan, and Burris (1982).
-1. Phonemic Stage: children represent the words in a message by one or at most two letters. that means children try to express what are they thinking.
-2. Letter name: The child begins to use some letters to match sounds, often using a beginning letter to represent the whole word.
-3. Transitional Spelling: children are writing words the way they sound. They are beginning to leave spaces between words and spell many high frequency words correctly. They use punctuation marks, sometimes correctly. They begin to write one or more sentences.

4.What is Emilia Ferreiro and Ana Teberosky's term psychogenesis about?
-To describe the gradual evolution of children´s literacy development. Children cmove through three developmentally ordered levels as theyconstruct the written system of Spanish. At each level children create certain theories about how writing works.

    5. In your own words, describe each of the three developmentally ordered levels found in children as they construct the written system of Spanish.
    - At the first level, children figure out that drawing and writing distinct symbol system.
    - At the second level, Children can use the stock of letter and they can express the words in differents ways no only with letters so they have the capacity of express what they want say in differents ways.
-Final Stage, In this stage we supposed the children basically they know the rules and they applied the correct rules in order to produce something.

  3. 1. Scribbles represent children’s first self-initiated to prints.
Children begin to scribble as early as 1 year of age, as they continue to scribble; children begin to notice what they are doing. As their hands and fingers become stronger and they are better able to control their scribbling. At the age of three many children get to know the difference between drawing and writing as different symbols.

    2. Children take what they hear in speech and represent it in print. They begin to relate the letters they are writing to the words they are creating and use invented spellings. This is definitely, a logical process because it allows children to create meanings and to have the ability to analyze the writing process. Studies have made it clear that children’s attempts at orthography are logical and reasoned. In addition, invented spelling changes over time.

    3. Invented spelling stages according to Temple, Nathan, and Burris (1982).
    • Early Phonemic Stage: Children begin to understand that letters stand for particular sounds, they often use single letters to represent words, sounds or syllables and might use the first sound heard in the word to represent the whole word.
    • Letter-name Stage: Children use most beginning and ending consonants and include a vowel in most syllables. Students use a letter or group of letters to represent each sound they hear in the word. Many simple CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant), may be spelled correctly at this stage.
    • Transitional Spelling Stage: Children are learning to recognize common patterns and structures in words, and they begin to use those patterns in their writing.

    4. Emilia Ferreiro and Ana Teberosky's term psychogenesis, is about describing the gradual evolution of children through three developmentally ordered levels as they construct the written system of Spanish.

    5. The three developmentally ordered levels found in children as they construct the written system of Spanish are:
    • First stage: children are able to tell apart the difference between writing and drawing.
    • Second stage: even though at this level children encounter some difficulties formulating words or expressing their ideas they play around with the letters that are available to them, changing the order to create new words with no regards to relating the sounds to the letters.
    • Third stage: at this stage children realize sound has to be involved when spelling, that every sound in a word has it own representation

  4. 1. What are scribbles? At what age do children begin using them and when do they stop using them and evolve?
Scribbles are the first things that the children do in order to begin with the writing process. Children may use scribbles similar to cursive to represent labels, names, or ideas. As motor control gradually increases, the scribbles more closely resemble adult cursive writing. By the age of three, many children already have distinguished between drawing and writing as two different symbols systems for expressing one´s meaning.

    2. Why do children start using invented spelling? Why is this process completely logical to researchers?
Significant changes in children´s writing occur when they figure out that the squiggles or forms are related to ( and must in some way symbolize) the sound of the language they are writing. In alphabetic language such as English, children begin to relate the letters they are writing to the words they are creating and use invented spelling. Studies of invented spelling have made it clear that children´s attempt at orthography are logical and reasoned also invented spelling change over the time.

    3. Explain three stages of invented spelling in English, before arriving at standard spelling, according to Temple, Nathan, and Burris (1982).

Phonemic stage: the child begins to use some letters to match sounds, often using a beginning letter to represent the whole word.

Letter-name: the children are manipulating one-syllable words and focusing on the connection with letters and letters sounds. Also they are focused on initial and final consonants. And they begin using vowels as well as consonants.

Transitional stage: in this stage the children develop their spelling skills. Also they record unknown words using syllable and compose longer messages with greater accuracy.

    4. What is Emilia Ferreiro and Ana Teberosky's term psychogenesis about?
They coined the term psychogenesis to describe the gradual evolution of children's literacy development.

-The fist one is when the children discover the differences between two distinct symbol systems. That drawing and writing are not the same.

    - the second one: they discover some facts about the words for example that using different letter forms for different words or changing one or two letters forms a different word.

    - and the third one and final stage is when the child relate letter forms with the sounds of the language.

  5. 1. What are scribbles? At what age do children begin using them and when do they stop using them and evolve?
Children begin their writing stage at an early age, Firstly they begin using scribbles to express their need to put on paper their first writing and it is at the age of three that these scribbles begin to make sense and mark a difference between drawing and writing as two different symbols systems for expressing one's meaning.

    2. Why do children start using invented spelling? Why is this process completely logical to researchers?
This children, attempts at ortography are logical and reasoned because they begin to use invented spelling and associate the letters they are writing with the words they are creating. This process is changing and occurs in stages.

    3. Please explain in your own words the three stages of invented spelling in English, before arriving at standard spelling, according to Temple, Nathan, and Burris (1982).
-Phonemic Stage:Children use this stage usually to represent complete word meanings using one or more letters.

-Letter-name Stage:They use this stage to represent one or more sounds in the word, they use the names of vowels and consonants as a strategy to name words.

    - Transitional Spelling Stage: At this stage children use both elements, the correct spelling of words and the spelling invented to make sense of the word or sentence.

    4. What is Emilia Ferreiro and Ana Teberosky's term psychogenesis about?
This study is about the gradual evolution of children's literacy development. Ferreiro and Teberosky (1982) they argue that children move through three developmentally stages and ordered levels as they construct the written system of Spanish.

5.In your own words, describe each of the three developmentally ordered levels found in children as they construct the written system of Spanish.

-At the first level of development Children realize that the writing and the drawing are not the same to try to use in the system of language in which they belong in society, they also decide that they should use a minimum amount of letters to write a word.

-At the second stage of development children may encounter some problems using words and convey their meaning, they conclude that they can use a variety of letters and words combining them and even combining the order to create a different word.

-At the final stage of development children realize the relationship between letters and the sound of the language, this stage is called phonetization of writing basically they already know the the meaning of a word just by listening it.

  6. #1 usually all children from one year onwards begin scribbling, as time passes your fingers are more firm and can do better, at the age of three to four years already know the difference between a drawing and scribbles.
#2 for them, it is easier for them to write it and so they are creating spellings invented by themselves. but scientific studies have shown that they have a logical form of what they do
#3 early phonemic stage: children understand particular sounds that at their age helps them identify these individual letters and thus be able to use it in one to complete.
letter name stage: most children use consonants at the beginning and end of a word they want to represent (cvc)
stage of transition spelling: in this stage is the most important as children begin to learn patterns and word structures.
#4 This psychogenesis consists in describing the gradual evolution of children through three levels that are ordered in an evolutionary way that build the written system of Spanish
#5 first: children are able to distinguish the difference between drawing and writing.
second: at this level there are some difficulties for the children but they also end up relating and creating new words.
third: in this stage the children realize that sound is involved with writing.

  7. 1. What are scribbles? At what age do children begin using them and when do they stop using them and evolve?

Scribbles: is similar to cursive to represent labels, names, or ideas.
They begin using them earlier than age three and stop by the age of three.

    2. Why do children start using invented spelling? Why is this process completely logical to researchers?
Children begin using invented spelling because they begin to relate the letters they are writing to the words they are creating.
This is a logical process because children’s attempts at orthography are logical and reasoned.

    3. Please explain in your own words the three stages of invented spelling in English, before arriving at standard spelling, according to Temple, Nathan, and Burris (1982).
•Phonemic stage: Children write words like acronyms, to represent their message.
•Letter-name: In this stage children typically write the sound instead of the written form of the letter.
•Transitional spelling: In this stage children use both the correct spelling word and invented spelling.

    4. What is Emilia Ferreiro and Ana Teberosky's term psychogenesis about?
They attribute to the term psychogenesis to describe the gradual evolution of children’s literacy development.

    5. In your own words, describe each of the three developmentally ordered levels found in children as they construct the written system of Spanish.
-First level of development, children write short words, they realize that drawing is a different symbol system than writing.
-Second level of development, children struggle with number and quality of the written words.
-Third level of development, children may struggle on how letter forms relate to the sounds of the language.

Scribbles: for the little children this kind of symbols is really write, this kind of writing is really representative for them.
At the age of three years the child distinguish between drawing and writing as two different symbols systems for expressing one's meaning.

Why do children start using invented spelling? Why is this process completely logical to researchers?

Because the child relate the sounds and try to represent it in words. It is a process really amazing realizate by the children because they use logic and the analyze the sounds and by this process they create meanings. Studies of invented spelling have made it clear that the children’s attempts at orthography are logical and reasoned.

Please explain in your own words the three stages of invented spelling in English, before arriving at standard spelling, according to Temple, Nathan, and Burris (1982).

    1. Early Phonemic Stage: it is the begining of someting new, great, when the children began to understant that letters stand for sounds, they use letters to represent words, sounds or syllables and even use the first sound tthat they heard in some words to represent the whole word.

    2. Letter-name Stage: They begin using some vowels as wellas consonants, and they tipically utilize a strategy of using the names of some of thelettersrather tan the sounds the letters makein their spelling.
    3. Transitional Spelling Stage: The little learner begins to recognize structures in words, and they begin to use those structures in their phrases and sentences.

What is Emilia Ferreiro and Ana Teberosky's term psychogenesis about?

To describe the gradual evolution of children's literacy development. Children move through three developmentally ordered levels.

    1. They distinguish that writing and drawing are two distinct symbols.
    2. Letter forms use to express meaning.
    3. How the letters forms relate to the sounds of the language.

In your own words, describe each of the three developmentally ordered levels found in children as they construct the written system of Spanish.
    • First stage: children are able to distinguis the difference between writing and drawing.
    • Second stage: They encounter some difficulties formulating words, their ideas revolve around the letters that they know, changing the order to create new words to relating the sounds to the letters.
    • Third stage: In this last stage children realize that each sound has a word has it own.

  9. 1. What are scribbles? At what age do children begin use them and what do they stop using then and evolve?
Scribbles are the first thing Children make anywhere they can write, to start the process of writing. Children use scribbles to somehow, show their ideas, and names, through many kinds of figures and draws. The more they practice writing, the faster they leave scribbles behind, they stop using this technique approximately when they are three, because they already know and are able to recognize what drawing and writing are.

    2. Why do children start using invented spelling? Why is this process completely logical to researchers?
Children start using invented spelling because they relate the letters they are writing to the words they are creating. They use an invented letter to say which they think is the correct. This is completely reasonable to researchers because the most important changes in children occur when they realized what they are writing, when they know what the squiggle is saying, and they join every sound they hear with a word.

    3. Explain in your own words the three steps of the invented spelling in English, before arriving at standard spelling according to Temple, Nathan, and Burris (1982).
•Early phonemic stage: children make kinds of acronyms to spell the words also, they short the words.
•Letter-name: children use the strategy of of using the names of the letters instead of the sound the letters make.
•Transitional spelling: children use spelling here as they hear the word. They might use invented spellings.

    4. What is Emilia Ferreiro and Ana Teberosky's term psychogenesis about?
That term is issued to describe the gradual evolution of children literacy development.

    5. In your own words, describe each of the three developmentally ordered levels fond in children as they construct the written system of Spanish.
•At the first level children realized that drawing and writing are two distinct symbol systems. They see what are around them and adapt the letters from their own writing.
•At the second level children struggle both with quantitative and qualitative variations in the letter forms they use to express meaning. Here they know they are able to play with the order of the letters to make other words without relating forms of specific sounds.
•The final stage involves the child considering how letter forms relate to the sounds of the language, also called by Ferreiro (1990) Phonetization of writing.
First, each part of a word most be represented by a letter. Second, some syllables are represented and some units of sounds are represented separately. Finally, children understand that each sound in a words ends to be represented by a letter.

Scribbles are written symbols that children use to represent labels, names or ideas, and it is the way how they express their purposes, scribbles are more closely resemble adult cursive writing, Scribbles are used by children much earlier than age three and by the age of three many children already have distinguished between drawing and writing as two different symbol system for expressing meaning.
    2. Why do children start using invented spelling? Why is this process completely logical to researchers?

    3. Please explain in your own words the three stages of invented spelling in English, before arriving at standard spelling, according to Temple, Nathan, and Burris (1982).
    Stages of invented spelling:
    • Phonemic stage: At these stage children have not identify segmentation of words, that is why they represent a message or a word by only one or two letters, usually at these stage children see a letter at any place and relate that word with the situation then, they write that letter down and assign a meaning for it.
    • Letter name: Children begin to use more than one sound on a letter, which means that at this stage children use the name of the letters rather that the sound of them, because they cannot combine letters to make words and they use maybe a letter as a syllable.
    • Transitional spelling: At this stage children start to combine both, the invented spelling and the correct spelling, which means that in this stage children reflect about the writing and they try to make it as perfect as possible.

    4. What is Emilia Ferreiro and Ana Teberosky's term psychogenesis about?
Psychogenesis is a term used to describe the gradual evolution of children’s literacy development, Ferreiro and Teberosky suggest that children move through three developmentally ordered levels as they construct the written system of Spanish, at each level children create certain theories about how writing works.
    5. In your own words, describe each of the three developmentally ordered levels found in children as they construct the written system of Spanish.
At the first level of development children discover that drawing and writing are two distinct symbol systems, it means that at this level if you say a child to please write his or her name she or he is going to write a letter she or he has already seen at wherever place but is not going to draw her or himself; at the second level children try to create words taking into account the variation of letter quantitatively as well as qualitatively and it is a really difficult struggle, because they must identify different letters form for different words, change one or two letters forms in a sequence to create a different word and change the order of the letters forms to make a different words; and the third level children reflect about the sound which belongs to each letter, syllable and words, understanding that every letters of the alphabet has a sound and that every word has immersed a combination of sounds which represents a letter.
